Congratulations to Steve Danyew whose composition "On Green Mountains" was chosen as the winner of the 2009 Octarium Composition Competition and is featured on Octarium's 2009 release Modern Masters.


Congratulations also to Jason Saunders, whose composition "Ave Maria" was named runner-up in the competition. and featured on the December 2009 holiday concerts.

                                2010 Guidelines

 

For the 2010 competition, Octarium seeks creative arrangements and transcriptions of existing musical works. 

See Should Have Been Choral programs for examples of arrangments previously performed by Octarium.

 

Guidelines for submitted compositions:

• Must be a vocal arrangement of a piece already created for other forces ( i.e. an orchestral piece, pop song or piano study arranged for unaccompanied SATB voice)

 

• Mixed Choir (SATB) divisi is acceptable but must not exceed

• Unaccompanied


• Three to six minutes’ duration


• Unpublished works which have not received a midwest premier

performance

 

•   An approved Request for Permission to Arrange must be submitted for works under copyright.

 

 

Prizes:
• $500 plus travel expenses to Kansas City for attendance at

premier performance by Octarium during its 2010-2011 concert season


• Possible future publication through Octarium Press


• Possible inclusion on future Octarium recording releases


 

Submission Guidelines:
• Five (5) copies of the submitted score must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2010. Only one composition per entrant may be submitted. The winning composer will be notified by mail (and/or email) in May 2010 and the winning composer’s name will be placed on the Octarium website, www.octarium.org

 

• Names must not appear on the score. Instead, please include your name, address, e-mail address, phone number(s) and title of composition in a separate envelope attached by paper clip to one of the scores.

 

• Please include a brief resume outlining prior musical experience and education

 

• Submissions will be evaluated by a committee of singers, composers and conductors who will determine the winning entry.

 

• The winning score will be reproduced solely for performance by Octarium. Copies will be destroyed in the event of future publication.

 

• Octarium will have a non-exclusive, world-wide perpetual license to perform the winning score.

 

• Octarium shall have the right to record the premier performance for archival and other purposes, including distribution and sale of such recording.

 

• No scores will be returned.
